Alex Austin was first exposed to silver at the age of eleven, and no one would have guessed then that a silversmith was going to evolve from that little person. Always creative, Alex spent all free time available working and traveling to see and experiment in art.
During her undergraduate studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at Tufts University, Alex was reintroduced to silver. Around this time she explore other media as well as the world. She traveled to Australia to do postgraduate studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
By this time Alex had been exhibiting and showing work for years. Upon her return to the United States, Alex established Austin Creations. She was a Rosen Group NICHE Award Finalist in 2002 and a NICHE Award Winner in 2001. In 2000, Alex won the National Merit Award for silversmithing and jewelry, also from the Rosen Group. She has written articles for various publications, including Lapidary Journal, and has recently published a book, The Craft of Silversmithing.
