During her undergraduate studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at Tufts University, Alex was reintroduced to silver. Around this time she explored other media as well as the world. She traveled to Australia to do postgraduate studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Upon her return to the United States, Alex established Austin Creations. She was a Rosen Group NICHE Award Finalist in 2002 and a NICHE Award Winner in 2001. In 2000, Alex won the National Merit Award for silversmithing and jewelry, also from the Rosen Group. She has written articles for various publications, including Lapidary Journal, and has recently published a book, The Craft of Silversmithing.
