I accidentally discovered that I liked working with wood when I was in college. I was looking for something to do and found out that the theatre department needed help building scenery. I had never held a hammer or even painted anything before this. I was handed a jigsaw and told to cut a detailed pattern in a large sheet of plywood. I had the distinct feeling that no one expected me to actually finish it. Sensing the dare, I was determined to do it and after breaking countless blades, I succeeded. I continued to work on building scenery throughout college, but pretty much stopped after I started working.
About 25 years later, my husband had started to do more woodworking and I decided to look for something woodworking-related that I would like to do. I took a class in cutting Christmas ornaments on the scroll saw and found a niche. That kept me fairly content until I discovered the art of intarsia. I needed to become much more accurate in my cutting in order to be good at that (or spend a LOT of time sanding). My trivets and decorations started out as a result of that practice. I have been fortunate to receive a lot of encouragement and support from my husband, and from members of NCwoodworkers.net.
