Gina Skillings

My work is inspired by nature: earthy and organic with accents of color. The textural and visual contrasts between clay and fiber create an invitation to touch and explore the rich surfaces. Stoneware clay is textured and highlighted with oxide washes and variegated glazes are suggestive of nature's elements of earth and water. Using only food-safe glazes, the art I create to decorate the home becomes functional as well.

My ceramic work marries my love of clay with years of sewing and weaving. Lacing and stitches enhance many of my pieces along with acccents of handmade beads. Unique fiber studies are created with petals, leaves, seeds and fibers. As these are layered and quilted I create an individualized fiber study to be mounted or stitched to its clay vessel.
