After attending the Univeristy of Virginia and earning a Ph.D. in mathematics, Keith Allen went on to teach mathematics and computer science at UNC-Charlotte and Clemson University. In 1988 he moved to Orange County, NC and focused on his life-long interest designing and making furniture. In 1992, he coined the term "fun-iture", which was published in Fine Woodworking along with photos of two of his pieces. His strongest design influences include American architect and furniture maker George Nakashima, and Dutch furniture pioneer Gerrit Rietveld.
