I was first inspired by the relief work from the early 1900's in the American Craft Movement. I became interested in exploring the mixing of historical vs. contemporary craft, and what this would look like today. Old black and white photographs, that's what these relief designs are for me. Life is made up of all these small photos connected together.
I spend Spring, Summer, and Fall looking at what is around me and by Winter time I have a clear idea of what the new designs are going to be. Come January I start to draw the new designs. Once the new designs are drawn they are transferred to clay and a carved relief is made of that drawing. In the next step, a plaster mold is made using the new relief. Once that mold has dried, clay pressings are made from it. By the beginning of Spring I am pullling the fresh new designs out of the kiln for the first time.
I enjoy playing with different sizes...They are great little snap shot-size wall-hanging reliefs that fit easily in little niches—above doors, in small narrow wall spaces, or as a grouping creating a larger picture together
