Keith Lebenzon
Artists have continually sought brushes with unique qualities to serve their mediums. Brushes that act as an extension of the artist's
skillful hand and creative mind -- rather than as an obstacle to be overcome -- are tools of great value. For years the only quality choice for
calligraphers, watercolorists and potters has been imported Japanese brushes sold commercially at prices outside the reach of many artists.
Keth Lebenzon was one of theose artists. He was best known for his graceful pottery and distinctive glazing style. His work with ceramic
imagery, however, has led him to also develop craftsmanship in the art of making brushes by hand
Lebenzon began making brushes for his own use in 1971. Since that time he has experimented extensively with various natural materials.
Although Lebenzon varies the character of his brushes through the materials used, a few common characteristics stand out. Their durability is outstanding.
The brushes are typically smooth in their release of fluid. They can be pulled into a fine and delicate line while retaining great capacity. Lebenzon pays
special attentoin to the handle as well, thus creating a brush that is not only functional but also an object of arresting beauty.
