Nancy Darrell
Nancy Darrell has made porcelain pottery in her own shop in the mountains of western North Carolina since 1974.
The trees, flowers, animals, and water around her small family farm provide the images that decorate her work. Before establishing
her shop, she apprenticed in traditional fashion to master potter Charles Counts in Rising Fawn, Georgia. After two years as a
journeyman potter in MAine, she settled in North Carolina and developed her style of natural images brushed on light porcelain.
Nancy is an art graduate of the University of Iowa. She has taught art in public schools and several short term pottery courses.
About the Pottery Nancy Darrell's pottery is characterized by its light weight, delicate tones, and graceful brushed imagery. In production, the fine porcelain clay is shaped on a potter's wheel, coated with a clear base, decorated with colored glazes, and high fired. The resulting product can be so thin as to be translucent, but it is strong and durable. Under normal conditions it is ovenproof, nontoxic, and safe for use in dishwashers and microwaves.
