Reclaimed Wool Heidi Leugers
Artist's Statement Since 1998 I have been creating whimsical ornaments and simple, useful things in wool as a way to express my passion and to share my joy for this unique natural fiber.
My inspiration comes from the feel of wool in my hands, the diversity of sheep breeds, and a deep curiosity to explore the advantages of wool's unique ability to felt or shrink.
The basic material for most of my items is recycled wool sweaters. They are washed repeatedly to shrink and tighten the knit then overdyed to achieve a wide range of brilliant colors. In addition to using recycled wool, I also purchase virgin wool fleece and roving from American sheep farmers and wool processors.
My goal is to create ecologically responsible, heirloom worthy designs that reflect excellence in a contemporary, yet timeless, American folk style.
