Jeff McKinley was introduced to flamework glass in 1994 by Gary Newland, of A Touch of Glass in Asheville, North Carolina. Gary showed him how to use the equipment to make glass beads and marbles. During his first two years of lampworking, he took classes from various glass artists. Then he decided to get involved in glass making full time and accepted a job in Raleigh, North Carolina at a scientific glass studio called Prism Glass. It was there that he was trained to create various glass instruments that had to meet specific criteria for size, shape, and durability. He gained valuable experience in the techniques of glass making while working there for two years. He returned to A Touch of Glass in 1998 to make glass ornaments and hone his craft.
